Sonoma Bargain at Whole Foods

L De Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

This medium bodied to luscious Cab from Sonoma was worth the $11 I donated to Whole Foods. It was drank with some aged gouda over two nights. That’s what I said. I used an aerator for 1/2 the bottle which softened up the tannins and brought out some heavy cherry and spice. Grab a few. It really satisfy’s the urge for a cab at an everyday price.

Jam Packed in the Russian River Valley

Ottimino “Ottimino Vineyard” Zinfandel 2005 – Russian River Valley

Competition brings out the best in “big box” stores.  Especially in grocery stores such as Whole Foods Market, Trader Joes, Kroger, etc. I don’t necessarily mean pricing. I mean knowledge.  More and more these stores are stocked with actual humans who know a little about wine, regions, and pairings. Lately I have been extremely impressed by the wine staff at Whole Foods.  Prior to Christmas I strolled in looking for some big, intense wines packed with fruit.  There were my usual sub $20 favorites lingering about but I wanted something new.  So off I went pulling Shiraz and  Zin’s into my cart.  Some were from wineries I have visited in my glass.  Others were “gambles”. Then, in a blink of an eye, a big smile appeared and asked me what I needed.  Happily, I told her I was looking for something big and spicy.  Do you have a Zin that would impress an old friend (Jim)?

“Come back on Friday”, she proclaimed. “We are getting in 3 case of some powerful Russian River Valley Zin.  It is CRAZY good.  Want me to hide you three bottles?”.

To make a long story short, Ottimino Vineyard Zin (2005) was well worth the wait.  This intense, dark juice box was jammed full all the dark berries you crave and the pepper and vanilla to put your mouth into ecstasy. It really is the best Zin I have had for under $20 ($19.99) in many years.  I just hope there is a bottle left for Jim.

We’re Back!

Thank you for your patience.  Jim and I went thru some tough months fighting personal and professional matters. But… We drank a lot of wine and are ready to rumble.
